ROUGHCAST / HARLING / PEBBLEDASH APPLICATION
WHAT IS ROUGHCAST / HARLING / PEBBLEDASH APPLICATION?
Also known in parts of Scotland as Harling, wet cast, dry cast or pebble dash. Roughcast is one of the most popular exterior wall finishes and render options for Scottish home owners. Mainly for its durability and aesthetically pleasing look, coming in wide variety of colours, known as chips or pebbles.
Traditionally wet cast. Which you would see on houses built in the 1920-50s where by the wall is first rendered using wet cement and finished with pre-mixed gravel. To achieve a look that is mainly grey and quite coarse, with what looks like bits of stone sticking out and cemented over. This was a tried and tested method but didn’t offer much in terms of appearance which is why so many have painted over wet cast to achieve a nicer look.
Now roughcast is done in a dry cast. Materials in the base coat or top coat include lime, sand and cement. This is trowlled on to either your existing roughcast or a somooth brick surface. This is mixed together and used as an adhesive for when the pebble dash is applied. We ensure that all corners of your home are straight and sharpened off then protected with a layer of silicone. This includes ingos and door frames.
HOW DURABLE IS ROUGHCAST?
Roughcast, done correctly is 5 times more durable than paint and can be cleaned using a biocidal wash to keep its appearance. New roughcast can be applied to older roughcast as long as the compromised areas of the walls are correctly removed and repaired. If a wall is damaged beyond the point of repair, we will suggest a full hack off and re-roughcast using a two-coat system.
WHAT IS YOUR LEAD TIME ON ROUGHCASTING? HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO INSTALL?
We currently have six highly experienced roughcasting teams of three which means we can start any project within 7 to 10 days. Our application process usually takes 2 – 3 days depending on the size of your home and weather conditions as we cannot apply roughcast on a wet day or in temperatures lower than 5 degrees.

HOW IS ROUGHCAST APPLIED?
PREP WORK
All parts of our customers garden and drive way are sheeted to avoid any mess to your paving and greenery. A rigorous bossed test is carried out on the walls to see what areas will need to be removed. Windows are covered with blue roll for protection and scaffolding will be erected and arrive with all necessary roughcasting material.

REMEDIAL STAGE
We must remove all areas of the wall that are bossed, meaning if there are hollow parts of the wall where the existing roughcast or wet cast is compromised if would need to be removed and the hole repaired to allow for a safe and stable application surface.
BEADING AND TOP COAT / BASE RENDER APPLICATION
We use plastic corner beads, bell cast beads and stop beads. Beading would be placed on all corners, Ingos around window frames and at the very bottom of the walls. This is done to keep straight corners and to divide the bottom of the wall from the damp course to allow a safe flow of rain, preventing water ingress. The ready mix of lime, sand and cement is mixed the appropriate measurement of water. Then smoothly applied to all areas of the wall using a trowel.
PEBBLEDASH APPLICATION
We use a shovel to dash the walls in your chosen pebble dash which is available in 18 different colours. For this we ensure all areas of the wall are covered. Ingos can be finished in scratch render or adhesive glass mesh to achieve a smooth finish if you would rather that instead of pebble dash.
